Topic: Writing a Letter Home from the Front

Instructions:

Step 1: Research what WWI soldiers experienced on the front lines and what they wrote in letters home.

Step 2: Take notes in the sections below about soldier experiences and letter-writing during WWI.

Step 3: Use your research to write an authentic letter as if YOU are a WWI soldier writing home to your family.

Remember: Think about what soldiers really experienced vs what they told their families!

1. What were the living conditions like for soldiers in WWI trenches? 2. What dangers and experiences did soldiers face daily? 3. What did soldiers typically write about in their letters home? 4. What did soldiers NOT tell their families in letters? Why? 5. How did soldiers cope with the horrors of war? What kept them going? 6. Research real WWI letters - what tone and language did soldiers use? 7. What would a soldier ask about or want to know from home?

Part 3: Your Letter Home

Now write your letter! Imagine you are a British or Allied soldier in the WWI trenches writing home to your family.

Your letter should include:

Proper letter format (date, greeting, body, closing)
Authentic details from your research about trench life
What you tell your family vs what you keep to yourself
Questions or requests about home
The tone and language style of real WWI letters
Personal touches (mention family members, places, events)

Make it realistic! Put yourself in a soldier's boots and think about what you would really write.
